Jerusalem March 13, 2012

At left, this is the New Gate in Jerusalem. New meaning only 500 or 600 years old. We passed through this gate the first time we went into the old town of Jerusalem.
Kathleen is preparing to enter the church of the Holy Sepulchre, which is over the spots where Jesus was crucified and buried. See how serene she looks?
We saw this coffee shop in Bethlehem, which is in the West Bank. "Stars & Bucks" cafe. Hmm.
Jill preparing to enter the church of the Nativity in Bethlehem.
We did so much today. A long day. Too much to write at 10:00 at night, which is the first chance I've had. So I'll abbreviate a great deal for now and try to fill in more details later:
- Bethlehem: Mass in St. Catherine's church next to the Nativity. Visit to the grotto where Jesus was born, under a church built around the time of Emperor Constantine (about 325 ad if I remember correctly). Shopping for locally made crafts. Visit to the shepherd's chapel, near the site where the angels were thought to appear to the shepherds at Jesus' birth. Visit to Bethlehem University and lunch there.
- Jerusalem: Procession into the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, where Jesus was crucified, buried and resurrected. Very moving! Saw Calvary and the tomb. Walk through Jewish quarter of old Jerusalem.
- Visit to shroud of Turin museum, next to the hotel, with many scientific and historical details to offer. (not the shroud itself - which remains in Turin, Italy)
